This article examines the forms of guidance that literature has offered for centuries, and their evolution into the Anthropocene era. Religious and philosophical texts have long guided individuals towards transcendent or collective values; with the Renaissance and the Lumières, the emphasis shifted towards a more horizontal accompaniment, centered on the individual and his or her earthly well-being.
